:In January 2023, The Grand Canyon Junction name change request was declined by the Arizona Board on Geographic and Historic Names.
The ASBGHN decided to not approve the Docket 2021-01 Grand Canyon Junction. During the discussion of Grand Canyon Junction, the Board expressed that the proposal doesn’t meet the threshold that it is a historically driven or necessary change. The Board was also concerned that changing the name to Grand Canyon Junction was focused on tourism and, if changed, would set a precedent for other communities around the Grand Canyon to affiliate their name with the National Park.
The Grand Canyon Junction Coalition
Even though we received remarkable support from the community, The ASBGHN decided to not approve the Docket 2021-01 Grand Canyon Junction in January 2023. We don’t agree with their assessment of the reasoning for the name change and are disappointed by their decision.
We received a remarkable number of responses to our survey – over 800! And of those, approximately 86% were in favor of the name change. We summarized the survey results breaking down the various demographics of the respondents, and listing the thoughtful feedback and comments we received.
We also received a Letter of Support from the Tusayan City Council and a Resolution of Support from the Coconino County Board of Supervisors for the name change.
We submitted an application to the USGS – US BOARD OF GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES, the organization responsible for regional names on maps and for the census, in January 2021 for approval of the name change. Once approved, all new maps using names assigned by the USGS – US BOARD OF GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES organization will label the area around the intersection of SR 64 and HWY 180 as Grand Canyon Junction instead of Valle.
